FCC-SoCal

Moon Festival AttendeesOur FCC-SoCal family will gather to celebrate the 2013 Moon Festival on Sunday, September 22 at the Ten Ten Seafood Restaurant in Artesia. Festivities will include games and prizes, traditional Chinese entertainment and great food, including mooncakes.

This annual event is organized by the Orange County regional group, but FCC-SoCal families from all regions are encouraged to attend. Artesia's location at the intersection of the 91 and 605 freeways makes it easily accessible from Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhongqiu Jie) is one of China's biggest holidays in its importance for families to come together and celebrate.  It has its roots in the Shang dynasty tradition of moon worship, and is held at a time of the year when the moon is at its fullest, signaling a time of completeness and abundance.

This year we are pleased to offer new, lower prices!  You can register online using your credit, debit or PayPal account via Paypal.  Click here to go to online registration.

The deadline is September 13 – so register today!

China Care Bruins Buddy Program - 2012

FCC-SoCal

China Care Bruins logoUpdate: All openings have been filled for this year. Kindly try again next year.

We are delighted to announce that there are a few additional openings in the China Care Bruins Youth Mentorship "Buddy" Program for the 2012-2013 academic year (October 2012 through June 2013).  It is my pleasure to serve as the Liaison between our adoptive families and the China Care Bruins leadership.  Please contact me (and not the China Care Bruins leadership) should you have any questions or concerns about the application process.

Founded in 2005, China Care Bruins is a student-run group at UCLA that raises funds to provide medical services for children in China's orphanages and mentors Chinese adoptees and their siblings.  Last year, more than 50 FCC children and youth were paired with college student “Big Buddies.”  The Buddy groups participate in monthly Sunday afternoon get-togethers on the UCLA campus throughout the academic year.  Visit www.chinacarebruins.org and check out the photo gallery.  During the Buddy gatherings, parents are invited to join in our Parent Roundtables featuring discussions, film viewing, speakers and more on a variety of current events and adoptive family topics.

Since we began collaborating with China Care Bruins and initiated the mentorship program in 2005, it has grown in size and has been recognized as a model mentoring program.  In 2009, China Care Bruins was selected from more than 40 chapters to receive the inaugural Outstanding Community Service Award from the national China Care Foundation for this mentorship program and received similar honors in 2010 and 2011.  For its fundraising efforts and community contributions, China Care Bruins received the 2011 Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy Award from Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and the Asian Pacific Community Fund.

China Care Bruins 2010 group shotWe are delighted to announce that there are a few additional openings in the China Care Bruins Youth Mentorship "Buddy" Program for the 2011-2012 academic year (October 2011 through June 2012). Founded in 2005, China Care Bruins is a student-run group at UCLA that raises funds to provide medical services for children in China's orphanages and mentors Chinese adoptees and their siblings.

China Care Bruins offers a wonderful enrichment opportunity for FCC children and youth to be part of a nurturing and empowering community of adoptee peers and mentors. The leadership and members of China Care Bruins come from a variety of backgrounds (and have many different majors), but are predominantly Asian American students.

The Buddy Program participants meet in monthly Sunday afternoon get-togethers on the UCLA campus throughout the academic year, enjoying crafts, culture, skits, campus tours, field games and more. Through these ongoing interactive activities, the kids and mentors will build their relationship, solidify friendships and develop camaraderie. The kids also witness the fruits of the teamwork, leadership and dedication of the college students who give of their time and talents to produce the program and to be their mentors.

Last Train Home - Debut Film from Director Lixin Fan

Last Train Home imagePatty Uy writes:
We saw this film last Friday and both thought it very well done.  Ed found it slow during the first half, but for me that helped the viewer experience the physical as well as emotional discomfort experienced by the migrant workers in their lives and travels.

We recommend it.  People who have read Factory Girls may have even greater interest in the related subject matter of this film.  It's playing in several venues around the greater LA area.

The Blazing Paddles Team Does It Again!

SoCal Friends

Race to the finishGenevieve Davenport writes:
Our team, Blazing Paddles had a great Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival this year! Our mixed team did wonderfully. We showed our team spirit and persevered to the end. We ended up placing second in the final race in our division on Sunday. We placed fourth in our second race on Saturday. Our women’s team (mostly moms and daughters) looked great and had three great races.

This year our team really understood that technique was more important than speed in every stroke that we paddled. Everyone worked as a unit which made the boat surge forward.

Fun With Friends at the 2010 FCC-SoCal Summer Picnic

FCC-SoCal

Friends at the summer picnicThis year's FCC-SoCal/OCA summer picnic on June 5th rejoined old and new friends alike at an unique park in the city of San Gabriel, in western San Gabriel Valley. We picnicked directly adjacent to Dinosaur Park, an artistic treasure nestled in the quiet corner of Victor Lugo Park. The event was well attended by over fifteen families, and offered opportunities for enjoying delicious food (Hawaiian theme!) and warm conversation. Many members met the new FCC board members for the first time.
