- From Betsy Rivera:

Moon campout group shotFor everyone who loved the Moon Festival campouts at Camp Harmony Pines near Wrightwood...or who wanted to experience it...SoCal Friends presents the 2009 "Daughter of Harmony Pines" campout...this year, on Catalina Island.  Thank you, Sylvia Worden, for this wonderful idea - we all want to maintain the 'Moon Campout' momentum!

Please join us in Two Harbors on Saturday, November 14th!  Make your own boat reservations (there are several leaving from San Pedro, Long Beach and Marina Del Rey - the prices aren't significantly different, so pick the one most convenient for you).

We (at least four FCC moms, and five FCC daughters, plus a motley crew of additional FCC family members) are taking the first boat over to the hamlet of Two Harbors, and spending a relaxed day hiking around Two Harbors and across the isthmus to the Pacific Ocean side of the island.  This isn't Avalon, folks - hiking, birdwatching and maybe some wading on the beach are all that are on the agenda.  No tours, museums, or shopping - just quiet family time on beautiful Catalina.

Important note: this is an informal, SoCal Friends  event, meaning - no formal agenda with planned activities, snacks or meals provided.  There is at least one restaurant in Two Harbors, but a picnic lunch might be more of an adventure!  Check out the Catalina Island Company's website for some very cool pictures and a virtual tour of Two Harbors.

We would love to have you join us even if it's just for the day.  For those FCC families who might be interested in joining a Brownie troop made up of very friendly "FCC" girls ages 6-9, we'll be there and look forward to meeting you.

If you have a bit more time, please join us for some stargazing that evening (dark of the moon, so we should be able to see a lot of stars) before turning in waaay past everyone's regular bedtime.  Catalina Cabins in Two Harbors had (last time we checked) 2 'double bed' cabins and 9 'bunk bed' cabins available.   Again, see the website, but essentially: these are tiny (2 person) cabins with a closet, heater and sink; there are, of course, toilets and coin-operated showers at the site as well as a communal kitchen.  Cabins are $45/each and linen service (sheets and towels) is available for maybe $13-$16/cabin.

You need to make your own cabin reservations, too.  Call the Catalina Island Company at 310-510-2800, have a credit card handy, and hit the prompts as follows:  3 is to make reservations, then 2 is to make reservations for the Catalina Cabins (the recording says 'press two for Banning House' but that is the correct one for the cabins, too).  For those not inclined to rough it, Banning House looks lovely, and is just up the hill from the cabins.

At least two of the big brothers in attendance will be celebrating their birthdays, so please call Betsy Rivera (310) 344-4436 and let me know how many in your party would like cake!

It should be pleasant during the day but chilly in the evening, so I'd plan to wear long pants, shoes for hiking and a light jacket, in addition to whatever you'll need if you're spending the night.  Be sure to check the weather report before you embark - rain is always a possibility.

We think fun is practically guaranteed for everyone, and we hope to see many other FCC families at Two Harbors the weekend of November 14th-15th.
